Shocks of Power
We have already said that mastering Power is a complex, uneven process that depends on more than the traveler’s personal will.
I want to focus on that last point. It is customary to assume that a person has only as much Power as he studies, trains, and practices for. As a rule, this is true. Yet one also encounters cases in which someone who seems to be doing nothing in particular possesses considerable Power.
I have often met people who had never heard anything about Magic — not about “Harry Potter” or “World of Warcraft,” but about real Magic — and who still carried a Power usually available only to initiates of high degrees.
From our previous topics, it is clear that the sources of this Power may be different.
Therefore, the state of readiness to receive Power takes on special significance. We have already said many times that Power flows only to where there is room for it. The reverse is also true: as soon as space for Power appears, as soon as readiness to receive it is present, Power must flow there.
I want to stress that such readiness can be rooted in the deepest layers of being — in the tasks and knots of the current incarnation — of which the mind may have no suspicion at all, or only the vaguest sense.
Moreover, the moment a being opens to the Flow of Power always comes abruptly and demands a kind of crossing-over: a shock that throws open the Gates of Power.
This means that even when all conditions for acquiring Power are met, some event must occur that opens the Way for this Power. Tradition calls this event a “shock of Power.”
Events that, from the outside, seem utterly insignificant can deliver the shock that lets Power enter: a chance meeting on the street, a single moment in a TV program or a film, and so on. Most often, however, the shock is delivered by someone who already has Power.
In such cases, the continuity of Power, coming into contact with the continuity of a person’s life and colliding with it, alters the nature of that continuity, fuses with it, and Power enters a person’s life like a thief. For example, if a Magus walking down the street sees someone ready to receive Power, he is obliged to deliver the Shock, fully understanding that by pushing a person toward Power, he pushes him toward danger and difficulty as well. Those trials will also fall as a burden of responsibility upon the Magus, as the one answerable for the change he set in motion. Yet if he withholds the shock — out of pity for the person, or out of a desire to spare his own strength — the Magus commits a costly mistake, because Power does not forgive cowardice and indecision.

The egregor, the flow where and in which the traveler evenly tries to accumulate power, gives a push. The instinct for self-preservation of the egregor compels it to push the one who is moving.
And sometimes such a push can arise from what itself has no significance, but adding to the emotional state can lead to a true wave of Power.)
