Dodecad
The quaternary structure of the manifested world, when viewed in three-dimensional space, is aptly symbolized by a tetrahedron. It is well known that the tetrahedron has 12 distinct positions — effectively, 12 points at which vector forces can be applied:
This means that the Middle quaternary— the Manifested world — stands under the influence of 12 forces that shape its form.
It is therefore no surprise that the dodecad is so ubiquitous in mythology: 12 months of the year, 12 signs of the Zodiac, 12 apostles, 12 knights of the Round Table. Each expresses the same idea: the One manifests itself in 12 outward expressions.
Just as the inner essence of the World is expressed by the Septenary, and the pattern of the distribution of forces within it by the Ennead, so its outer sphere is symbolized by the Dodecad.
I do not wish to repeat what has already been written at length about the Dozen. I will draw attention only to this: in Russian, the words for “dozen” and “stalwart” share the same root — meaning strength. This kinship matters in practical terms, because it clarifies the symbolic field of the Dodecad and, with it, the possibility of applying its principle.
One more point demands attention: when projected onto a plane, the dodecahedron, as is easy to see, yields the superimposition of the upright and inverted pentagram:
That is, the Dozen, as a principle, simultaneously contains Freedom (the upright Pentagram) and Compulsion (the inverted Pentagram). This is, perhaps, what the astrologers’ favorite motto means: “the stars incline, but do not compel.” Yet understood more broadly, the principle of the Dozen opens far wider Ways.
