Hello, a question arose. If mistletoe is a symbol of life amid the revelry of death and blessing, then why does Loki kill the beautiful Baldur specifically with a mistletoe arrow? The mistletoe plant is poisonous. Isn’t mistletoe a symbol of false life, a symbol of the passing year just like holly?
Hello, we are talking about different mythological systems, the murder of Baldur is a Germanic myth, and mistletoe is Celtic. It is known that the Scandinavians did not necessarily call ‘mistletoe’ the same plant that the Celts did. Nevertheless, mistletoe, of course, is related to symbols of the change of seasons, however, its berries signify the new year, new birth, while ‘greenery’ is the remnant of the past.
