What Runes Cannot Do?
Although Runes as a realizational-magical instrument possess considerable power, they, like all that is embodied, have limits to their capabilities.
Before we examine these boundaries, it is necessary to note the essential distinction between Runes as such and Runic symbols in general.
Proper Runes are a fixed set of symbols that serve an alphabetic function. Non-alphabetic Runes (for example, Wolfsangel, Valknut, swastikas, etc.) do not have that function and therefore, together with bind-runes and other symbols based on runic principles, should be classified as Runic symbols.
Thus, we will use ‘Runes’ for Futhark sets only (more precisely, the Futhark sets, since both the Younger and the Northumbrian Futharks are built roughly on the same principle), which reflect the phases of the cosmic process in three aspects (Being, Law, and Form).
We have also said that Runes express elementary Currents of Power that arise as the World Wheel moves through the corresponding stages.
Having a vector nature, Runes depend not only on their direction but also on their starting point and length. Moreover, the initial impulse that gives rise to a corresponding current can only come from an embodied being, since only an embodied being can create vortices and serve as their anchor.
Thus Runes as a magical instrument, although they possess their Own Realizational power, are closely linked to their creator, the Eril. Specifically, Runes work closely with the Eril’s forces, either amplifying those already present (as a Talisman) or attracting what is lacking (as an Amulet), but always within a specific field. However, when speaking of the amulet-like action of Runes, one must understand that they attract precisely the forces that are missing at a given level, but they do not transfer them to another level. Specifically, Runes can strengthen a person, but they do not make them a god. Therefore everything that Runes impart remains, generally, within the realm of human understanding and human capabilities.
This means that Runes, for example, cannot expel a Demon or resurrect the dead. But let us recall that, in addition to Runes, the same dynamic principle is expressed by other Runic Signs. And what cannot be achieved by proper Runes may be accomplished through them.
That is, a series of Runes written in sequence cannot expel a Demon, yet a Galdrastaf created based on them is capable of doing so.
Why is that? The problem of the interaction of Runes within a complex symbol is far too extensive to discuss in this post, but even at first glance it is clear that vector addition can give rise to an entirely distinct force, different from the originals in direction or magnitude.
Thus, the use of Runes as a magical instrument may take place on several levels.
On the first level, Runes are used to amplify. In other words, Runes are used, for example, to increase a weapon’s penetrating power or its effectiveness, to aid concentration of force, will, and intelligence. For such applications of Runes, an understanding of the essence of the current each rune symbolizes is sufficient.
On the second level, Runes are used to attract missing forces, for example, to assist in healing, to grant invulnerability in battle, or to protect against magical influence. Such use of Runes already requires deeper sensitivity not only of the runic currents themselves but also of the forces that generated those currents.
On the third level, Runes make it possible to exceed their own limits, to gain powers previously inaccessible, and to open previously closed possibilities. However, such effects can be produced only by bind-runes, runic designs, combinations of runes with other runic signs; therefore this level of runic magic requires great power and, of course, inspiration, in addition to a clear understanding of runic currents.

What is a Galdrastaf?
Galdrastaf (galdrastafur) is a drawing created by rounding the woven Rune.
Is there an analogy between “Galdrastaf”, runewriting, and so-called “individualization of collectivities”?
P.S. Etymologically, the word Galdrastaf (galdrastafur) means magical, wizardly in Icelandic, and stafur is a stick. We get a magic wand or wizard’s staff, whichever you prefer.
But why is “rounding” important? Or is it a symbol of closure, independence?
There is certainly an analogy. And rounding is exactly for reconciling conflicting forces.
By “rounding” here is it not “stylization” understood?
No, because rounding cannot be done at random.
Runes do not expel demons. Neither do galdarstaves. A demon is expelled by the person who interacts with the runes or who is under the influence of the galdarstaff, gaining certain characteristics on an energy-field level— and demons are cast far and fast…
stafur (stafir) – this is a letter; the staff part is not relevant. Galdrastra is a magical figure, not a design obtained by rounding out a woven rune, everything is much more complex. Rounding is for stylization.
🙂 Magic, after all, is unique for everyone.
Tell me, what does the last drawing symbolize – Agishjalm? It seems to look like a special sign that instills fear… Odin’s Horn is called, if I’m not mistaken…
The very last one is indeed Agishjalm, the ‘helm of terror.’ And the one before that is the knitted Rune made from one of Odin’s names – Tundur (‘The Rumbling’).
Greetings)
I have been skeptical about runes before. However, recently, just for fun, I decided to use them as a means to beg the world for small everyday favors) The objectivity, literalness of the realizations that occurred as a result of this innocent experiment shocked me. For comparison – a month ago, wanting to get drunk but having neither resources nor means for it, I visualized a pentagram and wished for white money in any form, directly required substance, invitations from friends (whom I don’t have))) and etc., and started waiting… and then got disappointed. The next day, an enraged neighbor downstairs hysterically cursed me during the stairwell battle for having soaked her with vodka… I had to confess and ask for forgiveness. That’s how it always goes – ‘I wanted to create a storm…’. But I’m used to such outcomes… and to the order of mutual settlements in case of successful coincidences)
With runes, though, it’s different – exactly what is needed arrives, no more, no less, everything is very boyishly straightforward, and no stupid jokes like the aforementioned. Yesterday it got ridiculously to the point – I drew ‘Fehu’ on my wrist and wished for a wooden thing, which I happily found (just found) in the form of a banknote… It’s amazing 🙂 But! I’m not little…
Enmerkar, the question is – what will I have to pay in return? You certainly should know… This is serious.
And another question. My youthful dreams have resumed – quite bloody and realistic massacres in very exotic places with equally exotic beings accompanied by the same silent and suspicious soups… Recently, I literally had to fend off a pack of wolf-like monsters, brandishing a materialized series of whirlwinds ‘Algiz’…
(I don’t read fiction, don’t watch action films, have no complexes))) Is this a mandatory attribute of working with runes or an individual characteristic? Because I’m quite cowardly and generally a pacifist… Honestly, I would prefer visions of an erotic nature)))
Hello! Odin paid for acquiring the Runes with his own sacrifice. And of course, nothing in this world comes for free. By using the Rune powers, you are, of course, participating in the battle of the Einherjar against Naglfar, and your visions confirm that. Any utilization of Forces that exist beyond the ordinary description of the world is dangerous and requires great courage and determination.
Thank you 🙂
Dangerous and beautiful in rhyme, you know it)
It’s dangerous; what other types of protection besides Thor’s hammer, the illumination of algiz, and the presence of a protective rune do you use? I recently read about grounding, but for what purpose? If you know, please share.
I’ve long wanted to study runes and learn to use them. Please advise where to find genuine and worthwhile literature. Thank you in advance. Victor.
Read O. Shaposhnikov and O. Sinko. From my perspective, they understand what they write about.
On some websites, people advise drawing runes on yourself, on your hands. Runes are serious. I bought O. Sinko’s books about runes. Thank you for the advice! ENMERKAR!
Recently, I applied Teiwaz for the first time, and the rune in the interval-space overall. The result pleasantly surprised me.
Thank you
