Fairies and “Magic of Knots

One of the important arts learned by humans from the faery is the so-called “knot Magic”. It was within the faery traditions that this art was created and used in its most subtle and perfected form. For the faery, knots were special magical tools by which they shaped reality, influenced human destinies, and governed the energies of nature.

Knot Magic originates from the ancient knowledge of the Alves, who perceived the world as a single stream of interweaving energies and information. Able to see the subtle threads of fate, the Alves controlled them by tying knots that either secured a desired event or prevented an undesired one.

The faery, descendants and heirs of the Alves, continued this art, though in a more earthly, practical form. They began using knots to interact with humans, animals, and space itself. Therefore, behind every “simple knot” stands an ancient and wondrous science of form and intention, opening a path to understanding the foundations and mechanisms of shaping reality.

Thus, the faery created knots for control and subjugation — for example, knots tied into a horse’s mane (“Pictish locks”) indicated the animal was under faery control. The knot expressed power over the creature’s movement and will. Knots in the hair of abducted people are signs of their being under faery control, and bridles and stirrups woven from knots are instruments for disciplining the mind and directing the will.

Knots in the form of bracelets, threads, or ribbons protected the Fair Folk and their allies from the Fomorians, demons, and predators of the In-Between, and also guarded the secret of their nature.

Using magical knots, the faery could bind an illness into a knot and then transfer it to another being, animal, or object, freeing the sick person.

Knots served as a tool of divination, allowing the faery to read the future and the past by the interlacings of threads. The weave of knots is an expression and symbol of fate and its intertwinings.

A knot is the physical embodiment of a point where threads interlace and where forces concentrate. In a knot tied in a special way, magical energy accumulates, circulates, and concentrates, and thus it becomes a focus of intention. Accordingly, tying a knot is an act of expressing and affirming a desire, intention, or spell, while untying is an act of releasing energy, dissolving or resolving a situation.

Therefore it is clear that knots reflect the essence of faery nature: interweaving, the close connection of the visible and the invisible, the material and spiritual worlds.

Over time, humans too noticed how powerfully faery knot Magic works, and began to master it themselves. Taught by the faery, they began to use knots in healing: the illness was tied into a knot and transferred to an animal or object, which was then destroyed, freeing the person from the illness. Knot Magic permeated sorcery and folk medicine: witches began to use knots for curses or, on the contrary, for healing and attracting well-being. Knots became an element of protective Magic: tied ribbons and threads guarded children and livestock from faery abduction, from evil spirits, and from the evil eye.

However, in its original magical meaning, knots also express and realize the intersection of fate and freedom. They embody the idea that fate can be governed by tying and untying the knots of one’s actions and decisions. In this way they reflect the structure of reality itself, perceived as a fabric of threads and lines of energies, where any event can be fixed, changed, or directed with the help of a properly tied knot.

The faery taught humans to understand the inner meaning of the processes of tying and untying: a magical knot is an act of shaping reality, determining the trajectory of the development of a future event.

The famous Celtic patterns are the best artistic embodiment of magical knots, adopted by humans from the faery and the Alves. Each element of such a pattern is a magical formula that directs energy toward protection, prosperity, harmonization, or healing.

Even in deep antiquity, druids learned from the faery the art of knotwork, understanding that each knot they created was a symbolic act of establishing and harmonizing events in the real world.

Thus, knot Magic is a special sacred art that arose and developed among the Alves, continued by the faery, and adopted by humans as a tool for changing reality. Knots embody the intertwining of the energies of fate and freedom, the Magic of healing and protection, reflecting an understanding of the “mechanics” of the universe and its hidden laws.

And today knot Magic remains one of the brightest and most effective threads connecting humanity with the Fair Folk, reminding us of a time when humans and the faery lived closer together, interacting and exchanging knowledge and wisdom.

  1. And what are the knots spun from? From threads of some kind of magic, for fairies, it is the magic of nature. Just tying a knot from fabric or hair is human folly; behind such a knot lies true power.
